A laptop that will not charge is usually a chain, and the chain has a weakest link. Work it in order — every step here is faster than opening the case.
Start at the wall: a different outlet, and watch whether the charger's own light (if it has one) behaves. Then the charger — ideally swap in a known-good one with the correct voltage and connector. Charger bricks die more often than laptops do.
Next, the DC jack. Wiggle the plug gently at the laptop's end while watching the charging indicator. If the icon flickers, you have found a loose or broken jack — a real, common, fixable fault.
Then the battery as a component. Many laptops run fine on AC with the battery removed, if yours allows that. Runs without the battery, dead with it? That is the battery, not the board. A swollen battery, or a trackpad being lifted by swelling, is a stop-and-handle-carefully situation, not a keep-using-it situation.
Last, the software side: a machine that charges only while off, or reports "plugged in, not charging," can have a battery-controller or driver problem rather than a hardware one.
