Every tool shelf has a story about the gadget that never earned its keep. This thread is about the opposite: the ones that earn their spot.
My short list, from a working bench. A decent multimeter, not because measurements are glamorous, but because voltage checks split a problem in half faster than anything else. A signal tracer, or even a small headphone amp, for following audio through a chain until it disappears. Wherever it disappears is where the fault lives. For mains-side vintage work, a safe setup: a variac and a series bulb have saved more old power supplies than any meter, by bringing dead sets up gently instead of hitting them with full voltage at once. A scope comes fourth, not first: wonderful for the ten percent of problems that need it, unnecessary for the rest.
And the unglamorous items that matter more than instruments: good lighting, a camera for photographing everything before disassembly, and small dishes for screws.
Notice what is missing: exotic cables and anything whose main claim is revealing what other tools cannot.
