Old gear does not automatically need a full restoration the day it comes through the door.
The honest question is what the unit is worth to you, what condition it is actually in, whether it is safe to operate, and whether the parts and labor make sense. A targeted repair may be the right answer. A full restoration may be the right answer. Sometimes the honest answer is to stop powering it on and have it inspected first.
What restoration is not: a requirement. A receiver that runs clean, runs cool, and plays music does not owe anyone new capacitors. The "while you're in there" spiral is real, and the gear did nothing to deserve it.
What it is worth doing anyway: safety work. Anything with a cracked power cord, a hot smell, or a history of storage in a damp basement has earned an inspection before regular use, whatever you decide about cosmetics.
